A Red-Light System has been installed on all of the FRGC Rifle Ranges. This system consists of multiple red lights with an audible alarm and is controlled by a single switch on the 100/200 yard range. This switch is located on the firing line, across from the target shed.

The purpose of this system is to let all shooters, on all Rifle Ranges know the condition of the range, either HOT or Cold.

The Hot/Cold Range Condition will apply to all rifle ranges simultaneously.

All shooters, on all Rifle Ranges are expected to comply with the Hot/Cold Range Conditions.

Range Conditions Described

  • Hot Range
    • Firearms may be loaded, handled and fired at targets downrange.
    • Ammunition may be handled.
    • Magazines may be loaded.
  • Cold Range
    • All shooting must cease.
    • Firearms must be unloaded, with magazines removed, chambers empty, actions open and placed on the bench.
    • Firearms and ammunition may not be handled while the range is cold.
  • Closed Range
    • Yellow chain and signs will be in place indicating that the range is closed. (Typically to perform maintenance on the range.)

Using the Red Light System

To Make the Range “Cold”

  • When shooters are ready to go from a Hot Range to a Cold range.
  • Move switch position to Up/On.
  • ALARM SOUNDS AND RED LIGHTS ARE ON AND FLASHING.
  • All shooting must cease.
  • Firearms must be unloaded, with magazines removed, chambers empty, actions open and placed on the bench.
  • Firearms and ammunition must not be handled while the range is cold.
  • When all shooters verify that all of the above “Cold Conditions” have been satisfied, shooters may move down-range to service targets.

To Make the Range “Hot”

  • Verify that all shooters, on all ranges are behind the firing line, and no one is downrange.
  • Move the switch to the Off/Down position.
  • RED LIGHTS ARE TURNED OFF!! (There will not be an audible alarm)
  • Firearms may be loaded, handled and fired at targets downrange.
  • Ammunition may be handled.
  • Magazines may be loaded.

When you arrive on the range firing line, and the lights are not flashing, the range is considered “HOT”. It is always the responsibility of every shooter to verify that no one is down range to verify that the range is “Hot”. If someone is downrange, and the lights are not flashing, go to the range condition switch and move it to the On/Up position to alert other shooters that someone is down range and that the range is “Cold”.
